If you are a good student and can score a very good 5A/4A in STPM or good CGPA in matriculation, then study at local Medical school may be a good idea.
Well, for the rest of the aspire future doctors, they can opt to study at a private local U or going overseas.
Unless you have plan to work or to migrant to a foreign country, then study medicine at overseas may a right option.
But seriously, cost of studying in a UK or Australia is exorbitant and not anyone can afford it.
Study at a private local University may still cost ranging from 250,000 to half a millions, but it is still more affordable.
How about choose a “cheap” and at a foreign country?
Well, there are no such thing as a bargain.
If you want to study at the overseas universities, make sure it is recognized in Malaysia (if you want to stay in Malaysia);
Secondly, if you smart enough and have enough money, UK/Australia/NZ/India is a better choice.
If you have enough desire and not enough brain power or money power to go to the above countries then.
Should your result is good enough to enter local private medical school, then please choose a local one;
If possible, try not to choose based on the cost. Good education does come with a price tag.
We are deserve to have a better medical training and education;
I am proud of my university and the training that had been provided to me.
Still, medicine is a life long learning.

But in malaysia, even though our STPM results are good, but some of the students also cant get into medicine in public university.

Unfortunately, it’s is the truth, not all good results student can obtain a place.
I guess when one with STPM result applying for medic make sure select the right Universities, if you have a very good really good As then UM, UKM and USM are the top choices, but if one have an average good result then newly public med school may be a choices and those stupid additional rules like the co-curriculum, make sure it’s get a proper good marks from the e teachers.
If one wish to study private med or go overseas, financial support is a big issues.

Well, sure why not if the university allow u to go for 2nd year. You must make sure you covered all the subjects taught in first year, after all, each university had different time table. Please discussed with your family on the options available. Study local private U is a very good option IMHO (ok, this is a bias ).

That’s a no brainer. It is either UM or UKM plus USM. There are the most established, institutions in Malaysia which also offer Master porgrams.

Hi, I guessing you are a foreigner . Um is Universiti Malaya, Ukm is Universiti Kebangsaan malaysia (national university of malaysia) and USM is Universiti Sains malaysia (science university) . There are the oldest public universities in malaysia. There have the best medical courses so its very competitive. I am not sure the course is open to foreign student.

Tou are right Doc. I am a Pakistani national and working in Saudi Arabia. My son is doing A level and appearing in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Can you please guide to look for a good medical college / university that should not be very expensive. I can bear expenses around RM 40,000 – 45000 an year.

Dear Mr Kamran,
There are a number of private medical schools in Malaysia today.
Here are the full list . http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/889461
There are so many new med school and the established universities tend to be more expensive.
I strongly recommend you to check whether the degree offer by malaysia college is recognized by your country medical council.
University like International medical university offered PMS scheme which allow student to do 2 year of basic science in malaysia and subsequent 3 years at overseas university. Monash university offered Australia medical degree. Penang medical college offered Irish degree.
The above universities tuition fees are more expensive.
I personally recommend AIMST as its course and fee is around RM250,000 tuition fee.

Hello, I will like to ask a question as well, hope you don’t mind. I am a Singaporean who is looking into studying medicine, will universities in Malaysia accept Singaporeans? What criteria will they look at? Thank you for the help!

I think most of private medical U in Malaysia accept oversea candidates.
I graduated from IMU so I am certain that they accept accept foreign students so long you meet the entry criteria. ( A level minimum BBB) http://www.imu.edu.my/pro-un-entry.html
Their FAQ
Does IMU accept international students?
The IMU welcomes international students. International students who graduate with the MBBS (IMU) degree are eligible to apply for housemanship training in Malaysia. International students applying for the medical programme are required to check with the respective professional bodies in the countries they wish to work in on accreditation issues.
We had singaporean who completed the phase 1 (2 1/2 yr) of medicine before proceed to oversea universities for the clinical phase.
To study full 5 years degree of MBBS (IMU) in Malaysia is not advisable, as Singapore medical council only recognized UM and UKM medical degree.
So if u choose the option of tranfer to oversea for clinical phase, then it’s would be no problem as you get the full oversea degree. http://www.imu.edu.my/pro-un-medicine.html

Hi I’m from the Philippines. I’m planning to study foundation in science and MBBS in Malaysia. My worries is that Malaysia requires practitioners to work in their country for at least 3 years before taking post grad specials. Do you think I can go back to Philippines after MBBS and do my internship in my country instead? I’m not sure if Philippines will accredit my diploma as a doctor. I don’t even know whom to ask. How will I know if Philippines will recognize me as a doctor?

The latest schedule II listed out by SMC;
1. One of the criteria for Provisional and Conditional registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) is a ‘Primary Qualification’ from one of the following medical schools.
2. Only the medical programme from the listed medical schools at the time of addition to the Schedule is recognised. Any subsequent significant changes to the medical curriculum of the listed medical school may not be recognised, e.g. GCE Advanced level or Baccalaureate level entry to a Graduate entry programme.
3. Only the campus that was in existence at the time of addition to the Schedule will be recognised. Any new campus that is off-site from the recognised main campus, whether in the same country or a different country and whether the same degree is granted or not, will not be recognised by the SMC.
4. For twinning programmes, doctors must have undergone the entire duration of their clinical training and final examinations in a medical school listed in the Schedule, before they can be considered for provisional or conditional registration in Singapore. Graduates from the Malaysian, US and Canadian medical schools on the schedule must have undergone the entire medical training on the main campuses of the respective medical schools – i.e. both pre-clinical and clinical for eligibility for registration with SMC.
Looks like SMC will not accept IMU PMS student .
Any advice on this conditions listed above by SMC ?

That right! So long we are in the government services, there are no immediate threat of losing our jobs or even get sack due to poor performance, unless we’re quitting! The downside is the salary is alway lower than the private doctors.

There is a concern of too many doctors in the coming year, but that’s not a real concern because there are still plenty of position for doctors especially in rural and remote area.
That is one important thing, we are alway short of “Good doctors”!
Contract job were given to foreign doctors only.
All of Malaysian doctors are permanent staffs which means they can stay at their job until retirement,

Hi,
In gov services, doctors start with UD41 till UD 54 salary scale. So, houseman salary is around 2000 plus, in addition with allowances n special claims, they can get about 3000 plus. So every 2 years, our scales will go up. So after 2 years in service, we got promote to ud44 n then UD 48 then UD 52.
Anyway, if u like to do medicine, just go for.
Just remember, making good career from doctoring is great but saving a life is priceless!

what a coincidence, i plan to study there too. Can i ask you a few things? Do they accept A-level or AUSMAT students? I heard that IMU is for rich people but unfortunately, i am not that rich, so i would like to know whether scholarship is provided there? thx.

Yes, IMU accept A level AUSMAT and many other pre-U. http://www.imu.edu.my/pro-un-entry.html
The tution fees is very expensive. Back in 2002, full mbbs local degree cost RM 250K. Now it’s cost RM 390K. http://www.imu.edu.my/pro-un-fee.html
IMU provides scholarship but i think it’s very difficult to get.

hi

YES. you need to further training and get a postgraudate diploma.
If yes, I will have to start it during the government servise or after the government service ?
Yes, u need to be in the government services. Private medical U can only offerred undergraduate and Private Hospital is basically interested in profit making.
Training is offered by major Universities-UKM,UM,USm
About how many years for the specialist study ?
Master O&G is 4 years program.
And does it qualified as master or any other qualification?
In O&G, you can obtain MRCOG which required UK trained or at present, majority of O&G specialists are Master program graduates.
And I heard from an aunt, she said that she practice specialist in public hospital, what does it mean ?
She means that she is a specialist works in a public hospital (under ministry of health) which aslo mean she in goverment services (as oppose to someone work in a private hospital)

hi doc, would you like to tell me why you choose to become a doctor and not other professions like, banker, lawyer etc. What’s the advantage of doctor above the rest in terms of salary, working condition, working hours and so on…? thx.
March 29, 2012 at 12:29 am
kingkongdoctor
I decided to become a doctor after seeing my father died of cancer. Kind of affect me during younger year. So it’s my dream since im 15 yr-old.
how doctor job is different from other professionals?
First of all, it’s not a desk job.
If u have a job like an accountant or lawyer or even an office boy, you may have your own desk and a computer. Well, for doctor, it is none.
Doctors working place is the ward, in the Operating theather and the clinic. (unless you a consultant or specialist)
And basically doctors do talk a lot, talk to patients (getting history and symptoms), talk to their colleague, talk to the nurses, lab people, patient’s relatives and talk and talk.
And for doctors job is also kind of carpentary or practical which like performing some procedures, surgery and fixing breaking bone.
Working hrs is 8 to 5, monday til friday. Doctor have oncall duty which basically taking care and review patients after the official working hours. Usually u have a consultant, a specialist, some medical officers and a few houseman. All the oncall doctors can make an oncall claim which approx 200/220 for MO/specialist and 100 for the HO.
Just like other jobs, doctor is offering a service (medical services) just like a lawyer offer legal advice.
When a person fall ills and got admitted. The patient illness is a problem and we as doctors, working to find the right diagnosis and the appopriate treatment.(solving the problem). Often, patients will get well and discharge home. Unfortunately, people do getting more ill and despite the best effort, people do die.
The advantage of being a doctor which is commonly known, you managed to save a life.
….And.more than that, u save someone’s parent, someone’s child and of all, their beloved one.
And that what make a big difference!!!!

thx doc. You are really an eye-opener for me. From now onwards, i determined to become the best doctor in the world and save as many people as posible!!!

Hi, kingkongdoctor, i just received offer frm IMU for medicine twinning programme. Let say if my PMS is UK medical school, so upon completion of 5 years degree,I will be awarded a cert frm UK. Then i need to be in housemanship for 2 years and compulsory government service for another 2 years. And i am interested in O&G specialist, so how should i continue?? Can i apply for local university UKM, UM or USM for the specialist master since i graduate frm UK pms? I can start the master training during the 2 years goverment service or after the service ? And may i know is it a guarantee seat for the specialist master ? And around how much for the 4 years O&G specialist master ? After completion of the master, do i need extra housemanship or government service ?? Really appreciate for your reply. Thank you.

So long the medical degree is recognized By MMC, doc can apply.
local post graduate master program is a 4 yr program apply to all specialties include O&G. Rules of application is completed 2 yr housemanship n minimum 2 yr medical officers and with STK point of more than 85 ( this is the yearly assessment)
There are limited place for master, therefore candidates need to apply go for interview
. So there are no guarantee of seat.
The master program can be in campus or at major hospitals. Doctor need to bound to gov after completed the program or else need to paid full fees if quit before complete the bound duration.
I don’t know exact amount and the yr bound.
I wish you all the best

Let’s see
medical school 5 yrs
houseman 2 yrs
medical officer 2 to 4 yrs
master program 4 yrs

So if you’re now 20, by 33 to 34, you’re a specialist
(apply to all surgery or medical field)
The average age of specialists in my hospital is in early or mid thirties.

It’s a 8-5 5 days jobs with morning of clinical round seeing inpatients and on some days of weeks, we seeing outpatients in clinic.
We have oncall duty in which is depend on the numbers of your colleagues and in which department we are in.
The salary scheme mentioned in the pdf file is for contract doctor, but it’s almost same with permenent appointed doctor and it’s almost also similar (according to the gred) which was adjusted with 13% increase from 1st of Jan 2012.

Hi
The salary scheme mentioned in that pdf is actually for contract doctors.
For doctor who have permenant service will be from UD41 to 44 then 48 then 52 and finally 54.
Anyway both are salary scheme and it’s almost the same.
The diffirent is seniority.
A HO is given rank of UD41, After complete housemanship, it’s upgrade to UD44, another 2 more years, it’s UD 48. It’s purpose, is to show seniorty and to paid us more.
You are right, you got your full degree from the university u attend.
You can check the list of universities recognized by MMC at this website. http://www.mma.org.my/Portals/0/Jadual%20Kedua%2009-11-01%20Amended%20for%20website.pdf

And in Melbourne u another 4 yrs which average tuition fee is rm 150 k n cost of living about rm50k per yr.

Hello doctor. Have you heard any rumour about overseas grad doctors? Does oversea produce better doctors than our very own Malaysian university? I’m in dilemma whether to read medicine in India/Jordan/Egypt or in malaysia itself. India is best for practical since 1 medical student gets 1 cadaver each, but I’m considering to go to Jordan also because I can study there straight away without having to take pre-U programme.
How do you think UK/Ireland grad doctors are doing in hospitals nowadays? Are they skilled in treating patient? Is it worth it if I study there?
I’m truly sorry to have troubled you with my questions but I need to make the best choice for myself. Thank you, doc. =)

kingkongdoctor
Hi, thank for reading my blog. here are some of opinion on the questions that u have posted.
Firstly, overseas grad is not better than local grad. In fact, I think local grad have lot of advantage than overseas. Some of the most important reasons are local got trained and educated at the hospital and they are familiar with the way we managed patient and often what is expected from them.
Secondly, learning anatomy is not necessity in clinical anatomy. Modern med school hv do away with dissection. Additional time is to equip med student with knowledge of evidence medicine, communication skill and so forth.
I do not believe O level / spm student can study medicine . You need preU or foundation course to prepare for medical course. Remember, there is no shortcut in study Medicine, we do need to work hard.
Uk/ireland grad just as good as local. Study oversea hv the option of working there.
Finally, my own advice is study local U whether private or public. If go oversea, pls study in uk/Ireland, then India, follow by middle east. Well , this may just my bias opinions.
I hope u can choose the right school and remember to enjoy medicine.

Besides that, are surgeons bound to government too like MO(guarantee a job)? Oh yeah, one more thing, have you come across any clinical psychologist? Hi, As i said before, after we get into enrollment of master, it’s basically on the job training, you work full time and train at the same time, tuition fee are paid by goverment. Clinical psychologist is totally different from a psychiatry cause the former is not a doctor n the latter is a doctor who treat psychiatry include addict patient.

thx very much. guess i have no choice but to carry out my master’s programme in malaysia. However, does private hospitals more likely to take in graduates from overseas or malaysia?

hi,
I am not sure the actual situation, however based from what i know of, it’s does not matter. Private Hospital usually hire specialist from gov hospital. They hired doctor who had post graduate training. I don’t think basc degree from overseas or local make a difference.
So, if an overseas specilaist return to Malaysia, he may join a private hospital and as the same as government specialist hopes for a greener pasture, decided to joint private practise. Should they be hired because their overseas training or local trained that depend on the job interview (i think so)

April 18, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Hi
I can’t remember the number of yrs, but at least few years (at least 5 I think).
Upon obtaining master in surgery or orthopaedic surgery , the newly surgeon is in UD48 and the salary will follow the scheme.(like other department specialists).
April 19, 2012 at 3:54 pm

UD 48? then the salary make no difference from an MO who works 2 more years after serving the government for 3 years (as you said before)? then what for we enroll in masters for 4 years to reach UD 48?

hi
I checked with my boss, apparently now master students like other Medical officers, are getting automatic promotion.
And upon graduation, they got a 1 level of promotion.
for example, MO with UD44 do master, 4 yrs later got to UD5, after obtaining master, jump to UD54.

Now there is still guarantee of HOship

yes. after completed 2 yr Hos and 2 yrs of Medical officer, can apply for master.
5) isit neccesary to take physics during stpm?
Not required. Bio and Chemist is must n math n Pengajian Am
Here is my 2 cents. There is plenty of local Med school. Old and expensive one like IMU n PMC, new one and low tuition eee like AIMST n UTAR.
My advice, go for local U.

hi, if i really go for stpm and took 3science sub and maths and PA ,its still hard to secure a medical degree programme even if i got 4.00 for a non-bumi like me .and if it really happens , im stuck in a dilemma of two choices, one is go to india to continue my dream to be a doctor since its cheaper to study at there, and the another choice is to get myself into engineering field. hi, doc. it’s me again. i would like to know whether a doctor’s salary enable you to have a luxurious life? cuz i heard people said that the salary you earned in the end doesn’t worth it compared to all the time and energy you spend in this field, and most importantly you wouldn’t have time for social life and spend those money too. Is it true?
April 24, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Hi
Yes, we can lead a luxurious life with our income PLUS income from doing plenty of locum. Government doc paid is comparable with other professions.
That statement is not true. Doctor didn’t oncall all the time.
On weekend off, i often spend my time with my family and friends.
BUT, if a doctor have other part time job like doing locum, then time is less.

Well, to study medicine, there is no direct admission from o-level, you need to have any of the pre-U which can be A-level, STPM, Australian matriculation or foundation science program and many more.
For A level is minimal of BBB in all 3 subjects.

But seriously that nothing to worry about, I am currently working in the gov state hospital and I have not receveived any news and the fact is we really need housemen in the wards.

ACMS wil be fine.
There is unlikely any exemptions in the credit but you can make inquiry to the school.
I don’t have any information on the career of an optometrist. I suggest that you should ask your coursemates, lecturers and your seniors on the optometrist career.
You must really ask yourself whether you should choose to continue your study or “wait and see and see how it turn out” and just go for the medical course.
So do take your time to think about it and if possible, discuss the matter with your family and friends.

Hi,
I took STPM 20 yr ago and I must said my 2 yrs of 6th form was fun and have get-along classmates.
If you find A-level is more intresting, you can alway enrol to one of the private colleges.
But I would suggest you have discussion with your parent about the decision to switch i.e the environment, classmates and etc,
and bear in mind, the decision will somehow affect your future, since with A-level result, it is not accepted in Government public Univesities as compare to Matriculation which actually an easier way (than STPM) to get an entry to public Universities.
So I guess think twice before make the decision.

July 15, 2012 at 1:38 pm
kingkongdoctor
Hi
It will be an automatic promotion unless a new system is introduced.
I don’t the know the actual hiring process of private specialist but i reckon it will like this:
1 Postions were usually advertised in newspapers and looking for suitable candidates.
2 Approach by the Hospital itself
3 Headhunting by recruitment agency
4 send our CV
and more which more or less same like other sectors.
I think what i meant to said is that the intake of master of surgery are limit and not refer to the practise itself.
After all, the number of surgeons are way below the requirement. Our Uni can only produced a handful of them.
So, there are still many contract surgeons from overseas in government hospital.
Therefore I don’t think there is a limit for numbers of surgeons or anestesiologists and for other specialists also.
The mass increasing of doctors happened recently and it’s not easy to complete post-graduate training. So, we are facing now is the large number of junior doctors and not the number of specialists.

thx doc. then does it mean i can sure to get a place to practise as an anaesthesiologist after i finish my 3 years of MO, cuz i hope that i can become a fully-qualified one at the age of 33. Is that possible? one of the thing that bothers me is that if i can’t get a place this year, i will have to wait for another year, and if i can’t get a place next year, i will have to wait another year again, and as this process goes on, i will be VERY OLD when i achieve my dream. Does this problem happens often?

Hi
If you’re into Anaest, the actual exposure started when as a HO, he is posted to Anaest department (is either A&E or Anaest).
Then upon finished the Housemanship, as a Medical officer, one is posted to various department of Hospital.
And you will choose to join the anaest department as a MO.
What is the job of Anaest MO? what I learn from my fellow anaest colleagues( I’m in Medical department), Anaest job can be roughly divided into the following: in OT, provide anaest i.e GA, spinal, epidural, local and so forth. In ICUour ICU is incharge by Anaest team when we learn the art of intensive care and treat seriously ills patients. thirdly, Acute Pain Services – provide post operating care to post op pt which on PCA pain relieved. Fourth, anest clinic, to review and optimize patients for Operation. and finally, anaest may get referal for “setting a branula”, yup IV access.
SO, we don’t need 3 years to practise anaesthelogy and to become a anaest specialist at age 33 shouldn’t be a problem.
I can see your worry of not achieving your dream.
My advice is to be confidence and be patience to face the challeges and problems.

Hi,doc.I am now studying A levels.I plan to study MBBS in manipal initially but I found that their cert. is not worldly recognized, will it be a problem for me if i want to become a specialist?
Answer:
All local privae med degree are recognized by WHO so it is recognized. it’s just that to practice in country like UK ans Australia u need to pass exam.
You can still become a specialist with local private med degree . You can sit for oversea postgraduate diploma.
Therefore, I plan to apply for newcastle university in Johor but recetly I felt like those private U just simply offer a seat for student.for example, one of my friend get ABBC in her A levels, and the minimum requirement for newcastle is AAA.So I think it is quite unfair for the rest of the ppl and i felt so disappointed to newcastle university
Answer: the entry req is just a reference. If u interest pls apply and get an interviews. i think there is a difference of local completed overseas degree versus a degree completed at the oversea uni. Pls confirm the degree obtain in newcastle u in uk same as newscastle in Malaysia.
By the way,how about studying medicine in Hong Kong University?thx.
Answer: I dont know the answer but I make a guess that the entry will be tough and pls write to the universities in hk whether they accept foreign students.

Hi
Taylors University Malaysia is a new medical University. There are other more establish private Medical universities in malaysia.
The advantage of study medicine in malaysia is the system is using English and basically following the Commonweatlh system (follow the british).
If you plan to work or settle down in Malaysia, it’s offers great advantage if you study here since you’re exposed the same working environment.
However, should you plan to work in your own country after getting the degree, pls make sure the medical degree is reconignised by your country medical council.
I can’t answer which is better but do write and enquire the University background and maybe ask people graduated from the universities.

Hi
With A level, i think application to anywhere and for anycourse will be no problem
and with foundation, it’s is less recognised.
I think it’s depend on what is your plan?
Here is an example, said you wanna to do medicine at AIMST, and you got no other interest, just medicine, so joining their foundation is a pretty good option
and another example, you still thinking of option joining overseas medical schools or other courses, then taking A level may be more flexible.

Hi
U see, when we finished our study and get our MBBS or MD, we will start our housemanship.
So, the government will officially employ us as a government doctor.
In government, or in private, there are level of seniority and salary scheme based on the position/level, said from executive level to manager level.
Similarly, at present, the government doctor have ranking,
a new houseman will be UD41, so he will be paid according the UD41 salary scheme.
After completed 2 yrs, a doctor who passed their Housemanship will go to UD44 and so forth.
After UD44, it is the UD48 and followed is UD52 and UD54.
Regards

I aspired to be a doctor since I was 14. I understand it was not easy to be a doctor and I strived hard and my result was promising till, I remember the disaster year of my SPM which left me regret for the past 12 years. I do not know if it was right or wrong and I never could. Everybody was upset and disappointed with me. Since then, I never want to mention anything about my past Spm.
Back then my class was fiercely competitive, people are selfish and teachers choose the bright student this makes thing even worst. I couldn’t cope with chemistry and additional maths, as time goes, I was down with anxiety, I couldn’t concentrate on my studies and Spm result was released and my dream was shattered. In one miscommunication 12 year ago, I thought I’m done with form 6 so I’m lost and I do not know what to do. During that time I was extreme introvert, my thoughts done more than my speech. In the end, I left Malaysia and worked in Singapore doing the job that I have no interest or purpose for the past 10 years. I may be a manager but living without purpose. Two year ago, I quitted my job and this is definitely not the kind of stuff that I want to continue for the next 10, 20 years.
Last year January, I have done some research on medical science and I finally found the school that provide Bachelor program in medical science. To be frank, I still have fear due to my past and worried that I would not be able to cope since I’m a working adult and I did fear for another failure. I have been carrying emotional burden for the past 12 years and it never go away.
In the school, I met the student with different age and background, as young as 17 and 51 years old. We motivate each other, some wants to be nutritionist, forensic scientist, medical technologist, learning for knowledge and I want to be a doctor. Through out the term, it wasn’t as bad as what I have previously imagined and I will be finishing this course in 4 months time and going to Australia for the final 2 years of Bachelor in Medical science which enable me to continue with my study in Doctors of Medicine or MBBS in Australia. The efforts and beliefs that I have engraved makes me stronger and to live my dream with an open eye.
My biggest worried is age and money since I’m on my own. I know that some University has age limit for medicine student. For medicine school in Australia which students have to undergo interview and GAMSAT which I have no confidence as if you are asking me questions about secondary school and form 6 level physics I definitely cannot answer. I have no problem with biology, neurobiology, genetics, or current physics studies on medical related. I have 12 A’s out of 15 subjects but I do not know if my level is equivalent to the university level in Australia which leaves me restless. I also know that some non science student e.g: Bachelor in Engineering our Business do also study MBBS which even leave me puzzled, without science background how can that possible happened to answer GAMSAT?? Or MCAT??
Secondly, since I’m paying on my own I probably need to work one to two year in Australia before I can begin with my study in Medicine and I probably will be 33 or 34 and it is quite disappointed to know that mostly doctor begin their studies at the average age between 22 – 25. So considering myself is a late bloomer. Some students advise me to continue my studies in Msia. I know I’m definitely not in the list when come to public University and private even far from that since I’m a poor student, even work day and night could not afford the school fees. So my ultimate choice will be in Australia since I will be doing 2 years of Bachelor of Medical science and part time job. If I have the luck in getting the contract job or job for 1 year upon graduation that really enhance my possibilities of getting PR there. I found out that the MBBS school fees for local and PR there is around AUD10K. If I can get my PR there obviously AUD 40K for 4 years is not a problem. Can you give me some advice? Thank you.

Dear Violet
I glad that you keep your dream of becoming a doctor alive after all this year.
And now you now the verge of starting your medical study.
And regarding your questions, I must admit I have no prior knowlegde in GAMSAT or MCAT.
But I think what you need to do is to study hard and pass the GAMSAT.
ANd regarding 2nd questions
I think it’s fairly normal to see mature students in Overseas Universities. The average of medical students in malaysia is actually quit young.
its never too late to study medicine, even at the age of 33 or 34. I myself start to study at age of 30 after working in a IT industry for 5 yrs.
Do you know that the founder of Hospice, Dame Cicely saunders who begin her career as a nurse, decidced to study medicine only AT AGE OF 33!
a
And regarding the PR thing, i don’t have any good suggestion as you may have more information than I do.
Here is my 2cents:
Unless you’re really keen to get medical degree from Australian and decided to migrant there and I would said work hard toward the goal and be ready.
And if you plan to return home and work, then I will suggest you to take a shorter or maybe an easier road to get your MBBS at local and at private medicine school.
FOR ME, getting a MBBS or MD will be utmost important and must to get it at all cost even have to settle and study in less prestigae universities.
I wish you all the best.
Regards
p.s
Getting my MBBS is like getting my olympic medal. I don’t mind if it is a silver or bronze, not nescessary a gold medal. What’s important is that I achieved my dream.

Thanks Doc, it definitely somehow gave me an idea. I never give up and stop believing.
The medicine school in Malaysia do not require admission test? It just interviews? I have done research where most of the medicine school in UK, US and Australia requires both admission test and interviews. As I know of admission test in Medicine school in Poland is not compulsory but Polish language is a must. Mean while, the medicine school fees in Ukraine is about USD 30K for 4 years and for Russia is about USD 6K per year and 5 years will be USD 30K exclude accommodation, foods and transport however Russian language is part of studies. The accommodation food and transport per year can make up about USD3K however I have heard that the medicine school in both Russia and Ukraine are not recognized. I’m not sure if the sources of studies are reliable. On the hand I still see the National University in Singapore did send their students to Russia for 5 years of understudies prior that will require a basic Russian. Do you have any idea? Did Malaysia also doing that? I thought of Russia and Ukraine as my back up plan just in case I didn’t get a seat in Australia.
I have a plan to stay in Australia if I can blend well with the life there and as they are currently on open concept, which the chances will be higher for professional to stay on after the studies. After obtained MBBS in Australia, do I still need to undergo 2 year housemanship training in Msia even though I have done it in Australia?
Thanks Doc, for sharing the story of Dame Cicely and now I have no reason to doubt on age. What is the biggest challenge you have face through out your MBBS? What do you think of the current doctor’s ethic in Msia? Do you think the medicine student in Msia are well exposed enough to handle real experimental human beings? Do the medicine student are tested on their personalities, like MBTI model, or Jung model? Is ESFJ type are mostly suitable to be a doctor?
I have to agree with you to study medicine is like an Olympic games, go through hurdles after another, marathon, and triathlon. It takes up many years of sacrifice, time, perseverance, and monies. I think it is about one’s stamina and one may be genius but can fail if not persevere enough in each race. I’m not after fame, after long years of studies, when someone called me Doctor I think it is worth of struggle and I’m happy.
Once again, thanks

Hi
Unlike the medical school in Oversease, Malaysia medical schools whether public or private did not have admission test. The admission is based on the Pre-U qualification such as STPM and matriculation and in private medicine school, they accept many other pre-U such as Alevel, UEC, Australia Matriculation, Canada pre-U, foundation sciences course and many more.
Usually an interview is being called but I think that just for formality.
I am not sure what our south neighbour doing but I have my junior coleagues who spend 6 yrs in Russian or Ukraine getting their MD. They learned the russian language in their first yr of study. Mny of them are still able speak the language pretty well.
Just make sure the medical schools are recognised by MMC. Here is the list: http://www.moh.gov.my/ai_positions/1/approved_institutions
Regarding Housemaship training in overseas and subsequent return to Malaysia problem, The ministry will check whether you have complete the necessary training in Medicine, Peadiatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic and Anaest/Emergency Department. If you have satify all the necessary training then Housemanship is exempted. If one fail to do so, then additional training will be impose such as to complete all the postings.
What is the biggest challenge you have face through out your MBBS?
>>> Not really. I passed all my examinations except the very first assessment.
What do you think of the current doctor’s ethic in Msia?
>>> I must say we up to the standard of being a caring doctor. We try our best to save the patient.
Do you think the medicine student in Msia are well exposed enough to handle real experimental human beings?
>>> sorry, i dont understand the meaning of real experimental human beings.
Do the medicine student are tested on their personalities, like MBTI model, or Jung model? Is ESFJ type are mostly suitable to be a doctor?
>>> I think good attitude and hard working are the most important attribute of a doctor.

Good Day Doc,
I’ve came across medicine forum in Msia of the newly graduates HO from both Russia and Ukraine. Have you ever encountered this blogs? http://unwantedcitizen.blogspot.com/2009/03/ukrainian-cpr-russian-life-support-and.html
I’m here neither to discourage nor spreading negative energy, I just want to get some opinion from the doctor’s perspective, since I want to be a doctor and it is good to understand more how do they actually work in the hospital since not many people want to share their life experience and I would say discovering your blogs is like an invaluable advice that I could not simply get it from someone else.
I’m not sure how true the forum is as there are always two sides of coin but if you ask me I’m rather on the preventive side to arm with intensive knowledge and burning desire to silence the critics and prepared for life-changing experience.
I’m actually not convinced even study in Russia as a backup plan if I didn’t get a seat in Australia. I would not want to end up being a doctor just by name without skill after 2 years in Australia plus another 5 years in Russia. If I want to work in Australia or Singapore, the medical degree in Russia would not be recognized then it is like pouring salt into the sea water.
What I meant about the real life experimental human being is, if the newly trained doctor are well exposed enough to handle the real life situation and not simply cadaver. When is the right time where HO considered ready to handle independently?
Is all the HO fully guided by MO throughout their housemanship? E.g: If one newly medicine graduates enter into hospital for their housemanship, what do they need to do? How the MO measure if the HO are able to resuscitate patient in case of emergency? In any case, they MO will leave the HO alone to handle the patient? Do the doctors use lots of calculation? E.g: ECG, Tendon stretched, Bone fraction, Action potential, Volume of blood pump out right ventricle to lung?
I have to agree with you, both good attitude and hard working traits are important for being a doctor, perhaps Im bias in certain aspects where I still see some doctors gets impatience and no compassion, still fool with other nurses, laugh and smsing in the room where Im a patience sitting there waiting to be diagnosed, that is why I’m doubt on their professional ethics and wonder how they are screened by aptitude and attitude test prior studying medicine. Perhaps it tends to be some black sheep around.
Sorry for sending tones of questions as ever 🙂
Once again thank you.

Hi
I had read the blogs sometime ago and I must said the blogger bears a grudge against the graduates from Ukraine and Soviet.
I do have experience working with many Russian and Ukraine graduates and I must said they perform the job well enough to go through the housemanship.
From what I observe is that Russian/Ukraine may a weak as compare to our local graduates in term of medical knowledge and skills.
HOWEVER, i must emphasis the important of learning and attitude. I actually more worries about the HOs attitude rather than their degree.
Because Housemanship is a transition period from being a student to a doctor and its a time to grab real life knowlegde and handling real patient.
You may be worries that is a medical student upon getting their MBBS is skill full or knowledge enough to handling real life situation.
My answer is NO UNIVERSITY will ever able to do that. That the reasons why we have Housemanship in the first place. And I must students trained under a local hospital will have the advantage.
I try to answer some of questions
Q: Is all the HO fully guided by MO throughout their housemanship?E.g: If one newly medicine graduates enter into hospital for their housemanship, what do they need to do?
the answer is first question is NO but we do make sure houseman know what they need to do in ward. FOr instance, a houseman must be able to clerk a complete history and physical examination of a patient and obtain the diagnosis and give appropriate management.
In real life situation, usually the first month of doctoring may more work as how to clerk a proper case, take blood investigation and set up branula and so forth.
a HO can learn from their more senior HO, MO and even specialist.
What we have in department is that we have a viva after a month of training, to make sure the doctor grab some general knowlegde of medicine and type of emergency situation .
Usually before the HO finished, their will have 2nd viva.
Some Departments do not have viva and it’s depend on the specialist or consultants.
A: How the MO measure if the HO are able to resuscitate patient in case of emergency? In any case, they MO will leave the HO alone to handle the patient?
Q:
I’m always tell my HO, if patient have something wrong, handle it first and if the situation persist than call your MO and ask them what is the next step.
I am using the blog that u mentioned earlier.
In medical ward, usually a rather sick patient, suddenly found unresponsive and BP not measurable. So what the MO expect HO is to check the reason the patient is not responding.
The first one is the vital signs, blood pressure and pulse, checking their sugar level and check whether patient s still breathing or their heart had stopped. .
If the patient asystole, doctor or nurse must initial the CPR while waiting for their senior to come in.
Q: Do the doctors use lots of calculation? E.g: ECG, Tendon stretched, Bone fraction, Action potential, Volume of blood pump out right ventricle to lung?
The most common calculation that I do is estimated GFR of a kidney disease patient and interpreting the ECG change.

Hi Doc,
Thank you very much for sharing your life experience and this will be a good exposure for a to be doctor. At least now I do have a clearer picture of what I’m going to face and prepared for it.
On the dark side, if in any event HO is unable to resuscitate a patient and the patient die, what will happen?
GFR, this is something that I have studied and drawn in my exam, I thought this is least interesting and kind of complex after all it takes so many processes just to produce urine. But after hearing from you, I guess this will be a good foundation for me. So basically, doctors do not use much Physics and Maths, isn’t’ it?
I have troubled by this situation quite sometimes,
I have options to complete my Bachelor Medical science program in a few Universities in Australia and I would like to hear from you will be advisable to go for as some school have shorter period of studies, lower cost, and some longer higher cost but do have MBBS or Doctor of medicine program.
Option A
University A – Study in the LAST 3 university in Australia, rural area and less prestigious university, 1 year to complete Bachelor medical science, school fees & living expenses lots cheaper but NO MBBS program. (rural area no part time job opportunity)
Option B
University B – Study in TOP 3 university in Australia, state university, 2 year to complete Bachelor medical science, school fees & living expenses for 2 years about AUD43K higher than University A since longer duration of studies but do have 4 years MBBS program. (Part time job is available)
To be eligible for one year temporary pass that enables you to find full time job in Australia, require minimum 2 years of studies in Australia. Upon 2 years of studies in Australia and managed to work full time job for one year will be eligible to apply for PR. If I get PR it will be a huge support for my MBBS school fees.
So do you think it make sense if I choose the option B with the longer duration period of study to increase my employability so that I can work one year full time job to apply for PR and to continue to MBBS again at the same school.
Or
Option C, study in University A to complete Bachelor medical science and take up Master program e.g: Specialize in Biotechnology or Immunology in University B then work for one year full time job and continue MBBS in University B?
Hope to hear from you soon,
Thank you very much

Hi
>On the dark side, if in any event HO is unable to resuscitate a patient and the patient die, what will happen?
It’s unlikely HO were blame for failed resuscitation. HO starts the resuscitation process but it’s the role of MO to handle the resusciation process.
Simple math will be enough in medicine.
I think Options B is the best.
All the best.

By the way, are you doing any research project at this moment?
If you are given an opportunity, what kind of research you will want to do and why? E.g: stem cell research, psychiatric research, genetic disease, autoimmune disease research?
Aside from that I’m curious how doctors dealing with infectious disease. The doctor might not aware if the patient had ever inflicted by disease such as tuberculosis, Hepatitis, HIV, since there is eclipse period of the virus. Somehow might get contacted with an exposed needle or blood or bodily fluid of the infected patient, especially there would not be any medical record for the newly walk in patient.

Hi
In Malaysia, doctors (from Consultant to HO) have a fix working place (Hospital). They are only change place in term of ward and department.
Consultant or specialists may have the opportunity go to other hospital to offer specialist clinic or for setting new guidelines or mortality meeting and all those management level stuff.
For example: our Neurology clinic which held every 2 months. The Neurologist is based in Alor Setar Hospital but he does visit Sungai Petani Hospital and my hospital.
Cheer!
p.s
That is a reason why Houseman is being call a “House”man? ONe must regard their ward as their own HOUSE.

Hi
Nope, that never happen during my Housemanship training and it’s defintely not the time to do it.
The Housemanship is actually a critical period as the bridging time to enable a medical student to gain enough knowledge and to become a competent doctor. So, during this 2 yrs of training, houseman are given training in various departments. Let take an example, a medical student may or may not conduct a delivery of baby due to the duration or some time the law not allow it. And as a Houseman in obstetrics, we are given the chance of learning the basic skill of obstetric like delivery baby.
Upon finished the Housemanship, that is the time that you are allowed to participant in the activities that you mentioned. If the doctors are posted to a Klinik kesihatan, part of job is to give health talk to the local folk.

I just ask friend of mine, a UKM graduate, she said all courses and teachings are in English. There is only one Malay subject which compulsory for all UKM students and not related to medicine.
I applied IMU with my old STPM result which is in 1992 an A in General paper, 3 B in Chemistry, Biology, Math and 1 C in Physic. It’s actually fullfil the criteria of IMU of BBB for STPM.

Hi
There is is no short cuts in life. I remember as a first semester student having trouble of difference a term bradycardia which description of slow beating heart versus a tachycardia – a fast beating fast.
BUT, by end of 5 yrs of educations, things will be business as usual.
Dentist pays is the same to medical doctor.
Dentists can specialist in many area of dentistry and currently MOH allow full scholarship to study overseas.
I don’t know about the stat but i think that not many people are keen for master in dentistry. The simple reason is a good dentist practice can easily earn a substantial income without the need of specialization.

I just heard from my group dental officers during a course last year and i dont know any detail of the program.
It’s hard to describe the feeling and I reckon one need to experience it. That one of special “experience” of being a medical doctor as compare to other career like i.e dentistry. (Dental officer rarely faces life and death issue. My dental colleague had a traumatic experience after attend a motor vehicle accident victim whom had died in front him due to massie bleeding due maxillofacial injury. He is in service for 2 yrs and it was the first time he watched a man died.)

Hello, just wanna ask is the MCAT accepted for entry to a MBBS program in Malaysia’s private U ? Because I do have a medical related degree already, but my CGPA wasn’t up til the entry requirement for the degree level, so I was thinking if I could take another route to it, hopefully I don’t need to revert back to a pre-med foundation class prior my entry. I have always been doubting my eligibility. thx.

Dear Charine
I am not sure about the MCAT acceptance into local private med college. So I browsed IMU site. Unfortunately MCAT is not listed as entry requirement.
Therefore I think it’s better that u use your degree for application despite the CGPA is not up to requirement point.
Anyway, it’s just the IMU entry requirement. I advise u to make further inquiry to the local private Medical schools (like Melaka manipal, AIMST, UTAR, Monash and etc)
I believed the University will accept a student who show desired to study medicine rather than just looking at the CGPA points

Hi
MD and MBBS is 100% same. The different is the former follow the US name and the latter follow the British.
MD stands for Doctor of Medicine and MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
PTPTN loan = RM 100K
rest of the 150k = other scholarships + family + self + private loan + charge house to bank

Hey Doc, I have some unsolved question in my mind after reading your blog ~ Its really very helpful. I am taking my SPM this year, But I am already planning my life path as a doctor. So,…..
What if I got into Matriculation and did badly, Will I still stand a chance to go for Local Private U since its only recognise in Msia only ? What if I did badly for STPM ( Didn’t meet min. Requirement ) Are they any alternative route to head ? Do they compare co-curricular marks like National MSSM, MSSS or MSSM ? Plus, If I attended an International Leadership programme, Does that help when applying for Local nor Private Uni. ?
To be a specialist in Orthopaedic, How long would it take to complete and roughly cost how much ( Total ). Is Malaysia offering specialising or Do I have to go overseas to study ? Which is more worth it if I am staying in Msia working ? What is the pay rate being a specialist compare to a normal doc. Will the income be worth the amount of time we use to study ( Live a Luxurious lifestyle ) ? Moreover, After our degree, Will be practicing as Housemen, Will we be sent out to other state ? Etc. I have a friend from Mahsa Uni sent to Sarawak for Housemen.
Like my parent said, I am not that “Intelligent” person, ( Top 40 in school ) comparing to my brother who is Top 1 in school, And would have a hard time studying medicine. Is studying Medicine really that difficult that I need to have a high intelligence ? Please do give me some advice on studying medicine for the future. To strive this goal, I have been studying very hard for my exams. Also, I did some test on personality career, All leads to Business and I have not much interest compare to Medical, But so, Is Being a doctor social-able because I just love people and talk, entertain people as it came to my own personality ? Hope that you could help me solve these question as I did some research on the net and came across this blog 😊 Sorry if I asked to many questions that bothers you. Really really hope that you could help me out because I really want to know the answers from a actual doctor. Thanks Doc.

Hi Doc, I am mentally exhausted in choosing the most suitable Medical University for my son. He has done SAM program and scored 89% in his ATAR scoring. We tried for Monash, apparently not easy to get as they require 90%. IMU was out as we requested for the twinning and they declined since they wanted 95% which was not stated in their requirement for their entry. Local was also not acceptable since they had opening only for Sept. 2013 which is a long wait. We are now seriously considering Taylor’s University but not too sure if they are recognized or accredited by the MMC and relevant bodies. For now that seems like a perfect choice in terms of their program. fees and it commences end of March. So would appreciate Sir if you could kindly advice me on this.

Dear Madam Premila,
You can try to explore other private medical Universities like Melaka manipal, Monash, Royal Perak, AimsT and UTAR.
I personally recommend AIMST as the quality of training and the duration of the setting up of college and financially affordable.

Dear Doc, thanks very much for your reply. I have checked the Universities that you have mentioned but Monash was our first choice unfortunately my son was not accepted. I have checked AIMST too but didn’t know if that was a right choice. I know Taylor’s is pretty new but after Monash looking at all the other criteria it seems like a better choice. Just wanted to know your
output and advice besides the Universities you mentioned is Taylor’s ok? With best regards

There are many private medical universities in malaysia. Some of the universities has been establish more than 10 years and some still very new. Here is the list http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/889461 .
I am a graduate of imu so I would recommend my uni but its fees has sky rocket since . For a uni which cost less then I would recommend Aimst

Hi Doc,
I happened to come into this site and I am impressed with your kindness in helping those who are aspiring to be a future doctor in this forum. Keep up your good work….
By the way, I do have a question for you. Is IMU twinning school degree recognised by Singapore Medical Council ? I heard that Singapore Medical Council recognises the medical degree so long as the clinical phase is done in a recognised overseas university and the degree is conferred by the university. Is it true ? Do you have any of your IMU school mates currently practise in Singapore using the twinning degree obtained from IMU ?
Appreciate it if you can enlighten me . Thanks

Hi
The students who enrolled to the PMS will get a full degree from the respective universities.
For example, if you managed to secure a place in Edinburgh and you will get Ebinburgh degree and definitely SMC will accept your degree.
Therefore, there are many of my batchmates who graduated from PMS (UK, autsralia, Ireland & Canada & many more), are praticing doctors in Singapore.
However, phase 1 result of IMU remained important as I believe SMC will review acedemic result during the interview process.

Hello Doctor ! Do u think working as a pharmacist is as rewarding as a doctor in terms of salary and experience in malaysia?
I received a conditional offer from a university in UK and still waiting for my Alevel result which will be released around mid of august. However, to become a doctor is always my dream but i am not ready to miss this opportunity to study overseas in which i can only go for pharmacy course due to affordable fees. I have heard some of my friends’ siblings regretted after they’ve completed their pharmacy course. That is why i am afraid that i will regret one day since my interest over medicine is greater than pharmacy.
What will be your advice?
Thanks!

Hi,
Doctor & pharmacist have different job and therefore it’s difficult to make comparison. Doctor can make money so does pharmacist.
But it’s different career.
If you have a strong desire to become a doctor, then strive hard to achieve it.
When I was your age, I give up my medical dream temporary due to my average stpm result and instead i pursued other career. I studied and worked for several years but i found it my heart is always in medicine. i quit and went back to u for my medical degree.
Pls think carefully and do discuss with your parent on your plan.

Hi Doctor,
If a person graduated MBBS from local private uni (IMU, AIMST, MMMC, USCI or others). Can they take up master degree in local public uni later? Btw, between AIMST,MMMC, UCSI or UniKL which one do you prefer?
August 1, 2013 at 1:38 pm
kingkongdoctor
Hi, master program is offered to all medical officer who fulfills the criteria, meaning obtain the mmc full registration, in service for minimum of 2 years ( excluding housemanship) and yearly assessment more than 85. Therefore there is no difference between public or local private grads in term of applying for master.
I recommend MMMC or AIMST.
I think mmmc is more expensive than aimst.

Hi Doc,
I am parent who do not know much about medical field. My Daughter would like to pursue her studies in medicine. Currently she is doing SAM. There are too many private colleges in Malaysia. What’s the criteria in choosing the right college?
September 10, 2013 at 11:10 am
kingkongdoctor
Dear Parent,
Just to share with you what is the medical degree about and some of the criterial that we can use to choose a particular college.
Firstly, the title of a medical degree is either a mbbs ( follow UK) or a md (follow the US and rest of the world) which basically same thing. Secondly, the duration of study is usually 5 years. It’s divided to 2 phases of study, the pre-clinical year and the clinical years. Therefore , it’s can be 2 1/2 year of pre clinical and 2 1/2 years of clinical or 2 years pre-clinical and follow by 3 years of clinical.
Thirdly, what do they taught in pre clinical years?
The medical student will study anatomy , pathology, physiology, bacteriology and parasitology, genetic , community medicine , clinical examination and so forth.
Some colleges follow the old system which student study subject based, where basically they will study the whole pathology subject and anatomy differently. The newly system which some colleges (like imu ) use is system based. So, instead of study all subjects differently, student is study a particularly system for instance respiratory system where students learn the anatomy of lung, the physiology of respiratory, the disease affecting respiratory system and others.
Fourthly, the clinical years. After competed and pass the pre clinical years, student enter the clinical training where they learn all the clinical examination, diagnosis and management of patients in hospital.
I agree with you that currently there are too many private medical schools in Malaysia. Some are pretty well establish like IMU (my alma mater), Malaya manipal, Penang medical college, AIMST, monash and still newer colleges that yet to produce the first batch of graduates.
I think we need to judge the cost of education (tuition fees) and the reputation of the college and also I think your daughter should have a said in the college that she want to go.
Many of the med school have excellent website and information.
Do paid a visit to the colleges that you’re interest.

Hi Kingkong doctor,
I am a parent. My son will be sitting for his spm this year. I hope u could answer some questions for me.
What is the difference between biotech and biomed. Which is better in terms of job prospects and salary? The biotech course which is offered at AIMST, is only 3 years followed by 1 year of masters and another 2 years of Phd. That seems pretty fast dont u think? Getting a Phd in only 6 years. What do u think is the average pay of a biotech graduate, for undergrad, masters as well as Phd? Is the biotech course at AIMST comparable to say Taylors or Methodist College KL?
Thank you very much for your help doctor.

Hi
Housemanship is 2 years with the following compulsory postings: medicine, obs and gyne, surgery, orthopedic, paediatric and one of this (anesthesiology, emergency, psychiatry or Klinik KESIHATAN)
Compulsory service means minimum req to work for the government and now is 2 + 2 which 2 years Housemanship and 2 years as medical officer.

After my son has completed his 5 year med degree, can he straight away enrol in a specialist med degree (eg Masters in Paedetrics, in UK) before he does his 2 year housemanship? If not can he go after his 2 year housemanship but before doing the other 2 year MO? or must he complete his 2+2 compulsory service first?
Thank you.

Hi Doctor,
Thank you for replying me so promptly.
I have a friend who would like to ask u some questions.
Her daughter who is 25 years old will be doing her houseman in Jan 2016, when she is 26 years old
She wants to be a pediatrician.
I understand that the MRCPCH consist of 3 theory exams and one clinical, am I right?
Can she take the exams during her 2+2 compulsory govt service, or must she complete 2+2 first before she can sit for the 4 exams?
If she does pass her MRCPCH exams, is she considered a child specialist (pediatrician) or must she still need to work in a pediatric dept of a hospital for a few years first?
If she decides to go to UK to do a 4 years Masters in Pediatrics like DR v in ur last reply, would she still need to sit for the MRCPCH exams.
Which is a faster way, do MRCPCH here, or go to UK to do a 4 year Master in Pediatrics
From ur reply, u said Dr v took 4 years to complete her masters, thats mean 2+2 then plus another 4 years. Does that mean its takes 8 years to be a pediatrician (child specialist). Does it mean 26 years old + 8 = 34 years old for my friend’s daughter?
IF she is 26 next year, how old will she be when she is a qualified pediatrician , assuming she passes all the exams?
Thank you very much in advance for your help doctor.

Hi
She start her MOship at 27. Let said after 2 years mo and she applied for her master , she should be paed specialist by age of 33/34.
I think most of people getting their specialist at age of 33 to 35 except doctors who try foreign examination like Mrcp or MRCPCH which is way faster then master program provide you pass the exam fast. Doctor can take the foreign paper even during housemanship.
Btw I am refer to the local master program and I don’t know anything about master program in UK.

Dr, I’m having the dilemma of choosing which medical school I should enter. IMU (locally) and Monash are my options. Based on your experience, are there such thing that Monash produced better quality of doctors compared to IMU cause everyone keep saying that Monash is better, making IMU sound so bad. IMU has partnership with overseas med school and those students who is interested in the twinning program must obtain their theory in IMU first. So of course they have to maintain good quality of education before they can send the students there right? Please give me your opinion on this. Thank you.
October 19, 2013 at 11:37 am
kingkongdoctor
Hi,
before i start stating my opinion, just beware that my view may seriously bias toward IMU, afterall imu is my alma mater.
i can’t comment regarding monash u because i haven’t work with monash graduates for past 6 yrs n don’t know how their program.
Therefore i would talk about imu only.
First of all, do not believe hearsay. People like to make casual comment like imu not good, product lousy doctors. but from where is the evidence they get it from?
i think IMU have an excellent record of producing MBBS(seremban) which i can see from my imu graduate housemen. they’re good in theory, knowlegde and attitude.
and furthermore, imu got many application despite the staggering tuition fee.
secondly, i think people complain that imu got so few lectures compare with other u. i think its thr quality vs quantity. imu program is modern and more up to date. imu lets students study plastic model as dissecting in anatomy class. because imu knew that traditional ways offers no advantage at all. Imu teach clinical skill n communication skill, statistic, problem base learing and so forth, in my opinion, make study medicine more fun, innovate n not a spoon feed method.
thirdly,
i met my professor datuk siva in a conference recently . i’m he is still teaching.
IMU lecturers consists many of well know experts in their field.
i think choosing IMU is the right choice.
but if u think monash is more suitable for u, its still the right choice.
i wish u all the best, remember learning medicine is a life long journey.

p.s imu grant mbbs (imu) , the seremban mbbs is just for joke

Hi, I’m currently an A-level student who wished to go for a medicine degree. Being a medic student is really costly and my family definitely cant afford me for 400K etc… I was considering UTAR but so far what I knew was their programme is still very new (just introduced 3 yrs ago, if I’m not mistaken) and have not been recognised by MMC… Is it ok if I go for their degree? What’s the consequenses in graduating from a degree unrecognised by MMC? Will my degree be wasted? I eagerly need some advice as I’m graduating in this June and there’s not much time left.
Thank You.

Hi
MMC will usually approve all local medical degree this include UTAR.
Currently the pioneer batch of UTAR yet to complete study.
When the first batch of Utar student graduate, then MMC will recognised the degree.
UTAR is headed by Prof Cheong, dean and also his wife Prof Boo, both are retired UKM professors who taught at IMU before.
So the course structure quit similar to IMU.

hi,
From your conversation with others, I know that you are very good in giving advice. I have dreamt to become a doctor but my result is not good enough to enter those medical school. Financial and age are the problems now. So, I have been thinking of studying paramedic after I graduated my degree.
So far, I heard that paramedic is not that (considered) “important” in our country. Could that mean it cannot be a career at malaysia. I wonder can you show me the list that medical school that recognized by Malaysia ? I could not find the latest version.
The last request, is there any ways that I can be phlebotomist if i did not study any medical course ? I would very very appreciate if you could tell me because becoming a phlebotomist is the last thing that I can do for my niece.

Or maybe after serving for several yrs locally, then work in Singapore ? Will the cert be recognised? Hey Doc, I have some unsolved question in my mind after reading your blog ~ Its really very helpful. I am taking my SPM this year, But I am already planning my life path as a doctor. So,…..
What if I got into Matriculation and did badly, Will I still stand a chance to go for Local Private U since its only recognise in Msia only ? What if I did badly for STPM ( Didn’t meet min. Requirement ) Are they any alternative route to head ? Do they compare co-curricular marks like National MSSM, MSSS or MSSM ? Plus, If I attended an International Leadership programme, Does that help me ( Having advantage ) when applying for Local nor Private Uni.
Thanks Doc.

Hi, from your comments I think you are a smart and articulate person and should be good and intelligent enough to become doctor.
Private U do accept matriculation result. They are looking at academic result. Study hard!
Don’t think about post graduate. Think about how exciting to study medicine. Yes. All specialities are offered in local. No need to go overseas. You will get training and working at at the same time and master program usually take 4 years to complete.
Travels to different part of country is fun and rewarding. I met my wife in a state 300 km away from my home.
Be confidence and have passion for medicine.

Hi Dr,
I am so delighted to come across your blog. You inspire me as well. For your information, I have strong passion to become a doctor since high school but unfortunately I didn’t obtain JPA scholarship despite of 10As and my parent could not afford to pay for my study in medicine. Therefore I decided to join nursing and I have been in Saudi Arabia since 4 years ago to earn and save my own tuition money to study medicine. I have been progressing well in nursing career path with only six years experience. I was also promoted as a charge nurse in Pediatric Cardiac Surgical ICU since 2013. Meanwhile I have obtained my Bachelor degree in nursing science with first class honor in IMU. Right now, I am looking for a medical school which falls under my budget to pursue my passion. I am keeping Penang Medical College in view due to two reasons, firstly it is near my home which helps me to save the accommodation cost and secondly the chance for Ireland exposure in the first two years. Eventually the degree will be recognized by MMC and IMC. You have demonstrated to us that nothing is impossible as long as you have the will. I was thinking about my age when I will enrol myself in the medical school. Would you mind to advise me on my choice of medical school?
Thank you and I appreciate your time.

Hi, there are a few private medical universities which have been well established, like PMC, IMU, mmmc, monash, AiMST and so forth.
I will recommend any of the above if one able to afford the tuition fees. If financial is a concern, I will recommend AiMST.

Hi doctor. I’m so appreciate that you are really willing to spend your time on replying our doubts on the journey to become a doctor.
First of all, I would like to say you had inspired me a lot when I found out you did not give up your dream to become a doctor after years of working. Actually, I am a dietetics students right now but I wish to become a doctor in the future. Well, when I was choosing my undergraduate degree, I never considered about MMBS. This is due to the high tuition fees. And the most important thing is I expected that I will go to the “science” journey. My dream is become an artist since I was very young, but my parents do not allow me to do so. Therefore, I found that dietetics seems like not a very boring jobs and seems quite fun, so I just choose to study it. However, in my first year of study, I found that I am more interested in helping people and saving people’s lives instead of giving diet advice. I fall in love with those anatomy, physiology, pathology, cardiology and other more medic-related subjects, and do not like the subject such as food service management, biochemistry, nutrition analysis, food preparation, etc. After a long time of consideration, I found out what I want to be is a doctor who can really help people to reduce their pain, to save their lives. So, I decided that after I graduate from dietetics degree and work for few years to pay my PTPTN before I started my medicine course.
However, my pre-U certificate is UEC, and the requirements for Chemistry cannot meet the minimum requirements of those private medic school. What should I do to enter MMBS course? Do I need to take A-level first before I apply for MMBS?

Hi,
Housemanship is very important in medical training. Five years medical training is inadequate. So in my opinion, no one can bypass housemanship and people with mbbs degree without underwent housemanship does not entitled the doctor title.
Therefore, it’s impossible to pursue postgraduate before complete the housemanship .
Let me take the training of pediatrician in Malaysia. I have 2 fellow colleagues which took 2 different path becoming pediatrician. After dr w completed his 1+3 services ( old system 1 year HO and 3 years Mo) he continues to serve as mo in paed department. He managed to pass MRCPCH this year. ( after 8 years as Medical officer)
The other dr v, she get into master in pead after the compulsory service and she also obtained her master this year after 4 Years in master.
I think it’s important to have post-graduate degree in today environment.
However, I think we shouldn’t plan so far ahead.
Let focus on the Mbbs first and then the housemanship. After 1 years into housemanship, a junior doctor usually will have the ideal specialty they interest and from there we shall plan the next move.

Hi,
Don’t listen to hearsay. Your seniors all are currently working as houseman and mo in government hsp. They are doing very well. And many of them are from foundation.
You need to check with other Uni whether they accept your donation. As for usm, it highly unlikely.
You’re sound worry. But don’t be alarm by rumors.

Hi there, i am a New Zealand student thinking about studying at IMU for the PMS- MBBS programme. I have read the previous replies and am wondering is it worth the risk to study the PMS-MBBS programme at IMU? Does IMU support its students? And what are the odds of retaining a PMS position in order to undertake phase 2 overseas, since as an international student paying international fees, it makes me quite hesitant to make a choice in which i dont know the certainity of being placed overseas, such as in UK (my first preference). Also, would you need to do internship for the degree to be granted, or will it be granted straight away after you graduate?
Thanks in advance (sorry for the ramble)

Hi I don’t know and I can’t give any concrete advices to you. I suggest you may write to IMU for more details
